Syria is now led by interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former commander of the Islamist faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. However, there is no direct vote for the parliament, known as the People's Assembly. So-called Electoral Colleges will choose two thirds of the seats with al-Sharaa selecting the rest. Not all regions are voting either: authorities have suspended the polls in three provinces for what they say are security reasons.
