by John Suárez
Executive Director, Center for a Free Cuba.

John Suárez is a Cuban American human rights activist and advocate for democracy in Cuba whose career has been dedicated to exposing and combating the Cuban regime's abuses of political prisoners, free expression and civil liberties. He holds a bachelor's degree from Florida International University in Miami and a master's degree from Spain's Universidad Francisco de Vitoria.
During 2000 through 2002 he was a program officer at the Washington D.C.- based Center for a Free Cuba, a nonpartisan think tank. Since 2002 he has served as a core member of the Cuban Democratic Directorate (Directorio Democrático Cubano), a Miami-based nonprofit founded by former Cuban political prisoners. Suárez's efforts emphasize building solidarity between Cuban exiles and internal opposition, positioning as a bridge for nonviolent change against the Castro dictatorship.
In 2019 Suárez was appointed Executive Director of the Center for a Free Cuba (CFC). Under his leadership the CFC has continued its focus on economic sanctions, international pressure and nonviolent change. He has overseen the distribution of the organization's "CubaBrief" a newsletter tracking the regimen abuses and has testified in Capitol Hill and before the Interamerican Commission on Human Rights in Washington and the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.
He remains optimistic about nonviolent resistance, warning that without robust international scrutiny, the cost of freedom could claim more lives. He continues working in the pursuit of a free Cuba where human rights and the rule of law are respected.
During this lecture, Suárez will emphasize the fact that Cuba´s regimen is a threat to U.S. security and hemispheric stability.
After the lecture there will be a period of comments and questions from the audience.
